SUMMARY:Fun with Fungi Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join Mattapoisett Land Trust and Mass Audubon as we head out on an all-ages family hike at ‘Walega-Livingstone Preserve’ in the Brandt Island Cove trail system. Long pants and hiking shoes recommended; the trail may be muddy. \nFungi are the decomposers and recyclers of our forest systems. Without them\, forests would take much longer to regenerate. The mushrooms we see are just the spore-producing bodies of a much larger and more complex organism growing in the wood or ground below. \nThe hike will be from 9:00-10:00am and begin at the Anchorage Way kiosk. Plenty of parking available on the street! \nThis program is FREE but please register here with Mass Audubon so we can get a headcount!

SUMMARY:A "Big Sit" with Nasketucket Bird Club
DESCRIPTION:In the style of a “Big Sit” we are hosting a fall birding event with Nasketucket Bird Club! A “big sit” is a type of birding event that usually lasts a prolonged period of time with the goal of identifying as many species of birds as possible while participants are all stationary and seated. For this program we are recreating the accessible nature of a “big sit” and so we’ll try birding together from a seated\, stationary location at the Grace Meadow preserve! \nBeginning promptly at 8:00am the program will be led by Justin Barrett and Mike LaBossiere from Nasketucket Bird Club. All are welcome regardless of birding experience or physical capabilities. We just ask that you bring your own binoculars and a folding chair! MLT will provide some folding chairs but we do not have enough for everyone\, so please bring a chair or comfortable seat for yourself if you are able to. \nThe program will run from 8:00-10:00 at the Grace Meadow preserve which is located at the end of Bowman Road\, just off of Aucoot Road. Please RSVP below so we know how many folks to expect. \n

SUMMARY:Saltmarsh Restoration in Mattapoisett: Public Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Please join Mattapoisett Land Trust (MLT) and Woods Hole Group on Thursday September 19th from 4:00-5:30pm at the Mattapoisett Fire Station (Training Room) for a presentation about our local saltmarshes. Volunteers from MLT and staff from Woods Hole Group will present the results of a June 2024 study of the 250 acres of saltmarsh west of Mattapoisett Neck Road. \nThis large saltmarsh system is suffering damage as a result of many factors. The study identified these factors\, projected future marsh conditions with rising sea levels\, and developed possible actions to improve or restore the health and resilience of the marsh.  The study was funded by a grant from the Massachusetts Coastal Zone Management office to MLT and the Town of Mattapoisett. \nThis presentation is open to the public and will include a question-and-answer session.  Please join us!

SUMMARY:Silent Movie Night: Down to the Sea in Ships!
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy an open-air silent movie at Munro Preserve in collaboration with the Mattapoisett Museum. \nThough Patience Morgan is sought by many suitors\, her father\, Charles\, insists that she marry a man who is both Quaker and a whaleman. Because Samuel Siggs convincingly poses as both\, he is favored by Charles Morgan–even though Patience loves Allan Dexter\, who is neither. Allan embraces the Quaker faith\, proves himself worthy as a whaleman when he is captured and tossed by stormy seas\, and returns to New Bedford just as she is about to marry Siggs. \nThe film contains semi-documentary footage of whalers at work and was shot in historic locations in New England\, most notably in New Bedford\, at the Apponegansett Meeting House in Dartmouth\, and on Water Street in Mattapoisett. \nThe authenticity of the whaling scenes are noted in the opening screen credits\, which praise the bravery of both A.G. Penrod and Paul H. Allen\, the cameramen\, “who\, in small boats\, stood by their cameras at the risk of their lives to photograph the fighting whales.” The Charles W. Morgan and the Wanderer were two of the whaling ships used in the film. \nPlease bring your own blanket or chairs to sit on\, relax\, and enjoy the show. This event is free and open to the public thanks to the Mattapoisett Museum’s sponsorship from Check Collision/Toyota of Dartmouth.
